 When the residents of the inland Port of Berkhamsted were faced with the potential loss of the last of eight wharves in Berkhamsted to a faceless residential development, an immediate and compelling medium for fighting this development was required. Susan Holmes, a concerned local resident, offered to set up a web site. (Save Our Wharf - www.saveourwharf.org.uk ) The creation of this web site gave our campaign the national teeth it needed. The loss of inland wharves is a critical national issue, but we needed a colourful compelling way to communicate our dilemma throughout the country (and beyond). The Save our Wharf website gave us just this opportunity. It has resulted in well over two hundred letters, national press reports, radio programmes and help from our MP and movers and shakers in the world of sustainable waterways development. The web site has allowed the immediate posting of up to date news. It has given all those who care the opportunity to object online with access to all the relevant information.
